Quickview: India's budget shows positive signs

by Emerging Markets Economist Craig Botham

In summary:

  • On balance, India's Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, delivered a positive budget speech yesterday.
  • While some aspects lacked detail on how certain goals will be achieved, we are encouraged that policy is going in the right direction.
  • Importantly, the government reiterated its commitment to the Goods and Services Tax and has announced a fiscal deficit target of 4.1% this year.
  • The budget also aims to increase infrastructure spending, address bottlenecks and encourage investment in the insurance and defence sectors.
  • We hope now that Prime Minister Modi proves as adept at implementation on a national level as he did in Gujarat

Past performance is not a guide to future performance and may not be repeated. The value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up and investors may not get back the amount originally invested.  Changes in exchange rates can also cause the value of investments in currencies.   Investments in emerging markets can involve a higher degree of risk. Less developed markets are generally less well regulated than the Switzerland, investments may be less liquid and there may be less reliable arrangements for trading and settlement of the underlying holdings.
