Turbulent times in technology

July 2014

James Gautrey, Global Sector Specialist - Technology and Telecoms.

James Gautrey looks at why and how the IT world has changed in recent years and whether valuations have sufficiently improved to revisit the sector.

Summary:

Consumer data demand, both on fixed and mobile devices, is insatiable.

This has forced corporates to innovate and find new ways in which to deliver, analyse and store the data that today’s increased connectivity has created.

Changes in the sector are likely to continue unabated, forcing IT metamorphosis in every corner.

From an investment perspective, technology stocks have performed very strongly in recent years and valuations have been pushed to eye-watering levels.

Although these have correct somewhat since March 2014, we still find the sector’s aggregate valuations stretched.

Nonetheless, we see pockets of opportunity for stockpicking among underappreciated names that are likely to benefit from the disruptive changes across the sector.

Past performance is not a guide to future performance and may not be repeated. The value of investments and the income from them can go down as well as up and investors may not get back the amount originally invested.  Changes in exchange rates can also cause the value of investments in currencies.   Investments in emerging markets can involve a higher degree of risk. Less developed markets are generally less well regulated than the Switzerland, investments may be less liquid and there may be less reliable arrangements for trading and settlement of the underlying holdings.
