(RTTNews) - Viking Therapeutics, Inc. (VKTX) said it has initiated the second part of a clinical trial evaluating oral maintenance dosing regimens of VK2735 in adults with obesity.

The trial is designed to assess whether oral VK2735 can help maintain weight loss initially achieved with weekly subcutaneous dosing. Additional monthly and every-other-week subcutaneous regimens will also be evaluated.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study is expected to enroll approximately 195 adults with obesity who are otherwise healthy. Participants will initially receive weekly subcutaneous VK2735 or placebo for 21 weeks.

After Week 21, participants will transition to different maintenance regimens, including daily or weekly oral VK2735, monthly or every-other-week subcutaneous dosing, or placebo.

The study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of VK2735 across the different maintenance dosing regimens.

Exploratory endpoints will assess changes in body weight from baseline and from Week 21 through the end of the study at Week 33.

Viking recently reported positive top-line results from Part 1 of the maintenance study, which evaluated subcutaneous dosing regimens for maintaining weight loss following weekly treatment.

VK2735 is a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist being developed in both oral and subcutaneous formulations for obesity and other metabolic disorders.

Viking is also conducting two Phase 3 studies, VANQUISH-1 and VANQUISH-2, evaluating weekly subcutaneous VK2735 over 78 weeks in adults with obesity or overweight, including those with type 2 diabetes.

VKTX shares Monday's closed at $29.28, down 2.20%. In the premarket, stock is up 0.51% at $29.46.
