(RTTNews) - AngioDynamics, Inc. (ANGO), a New York-based medical technology company Monday announced the publication of results from the Acute Pulmonary Embolism Extraction Trial with the AlphaVac System (APEX-AV).

The study, titled "Novel Mechanical Aspiration Thrombectomy in Patients with Acute Pulmonary Embolism: Results from the Prospective APEX-AV Trial," was published in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions or JSCAI on December 27, 2024.

The APEX-AV trial assessed the AlphaVac System's efficacy in reducing RV/LV ratio and its safety by tracking major adverse events or MAEs within 48 hours, including bleeding and device-related injuries. Follow-up occurred 30 days post-procedure, with results showing the device to be safe and effective for treating acute intermediate-risk PE, achieving significant RV/LV ratio and clot burden reduction with minimal adverse events.

The APEX-AV trial showed a 35.5 percent clot reduction and highlighted the device's unique design features, enhancing safety and effectiveness. The trial, conducted with the PERT Consortium and led by esteemed investigators, was first presented at the SCAI 2024 Scientific Sessions in Long Beach, California.

In December 2023, AngioDynamics completed enrollment of 122 patients in the APEX-AV trial to evaluate the AlphaVac F1885 System for acute intermediate-risk PE across 25 U.S. sites. The FDA cleared the system for PE treatment in April 2024.

The article concluded that "Percutaneous mechanical aspiration thrombectomy with the AlphaVac system provided a safe and effective treatment for acute intermediate-risk PE with a significant reduction in RV/LV ratio and clot burden with a low rate of adverse events."
