Indian Shares Edge Lower Before New US Sanctions On Iran

(RTTNews) - Indian shares ended slightly lower on Monday ahead of the announcement of fresh U.S. sanctions aimed at Iran.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will hold a press conference later today, where he is likely to announce tougher sanctions to economically isolate Iran.

Upcoming earnings from chip giant Nvidia, U.S. inflation data and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech also remained on investors' radar.

The benchmark 30-share BSE Sensex gave up early gains to end the session down 171.72 points, or 0.22 percent, at 77,369.11, while the NSE Nifty index slipped 32.95 points, or 0.14 percent, to 24,219.05.

The BSE mid-cap index ended little changed while the small-cap index slid 0.2 percent.

The market breadth was weak on the BSE, with 2,393 shares falling while 2,040 shares advanced and 255 shares closed unchanged.

SBI, Axis Bank, Trent, Bajaj FinServ, Bajaj Finance, BEL and Adani Ports all fell around 1 percent while Tata Steel jumped nearly 2 percent, HCL Technologies climbed 1.3 percent and Infosys added 0.9 percent.
